Your wedding day will be filled with moments you'll want to remember forever. The anticipation of getting ready, the emotions of walking down the aisle, the happy tears during your vows, and those quiet moments when you finally get to soak it all in together.
But one of the biggest questions we hear from couples planning their wedding is: How much time do we actually need for wedding photography?
A thoughtfully planned wedding timeline can make all the difference between a day that feels rushed and one that allows you to be fully present.
At Messmer Meadows Photography + Videography, we believe your wedding day should feel like a celebration, not a photoshoot. Here's how we recommend planning your photography timeline for a relaxed, romantic, and beautifully documented wedding day.
How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do You Need?
For most couples planning a traditional wedding in Vancouver or the Fraser Valley, we recommend approximately eight hours of wedding photography coverage.
Eight hours allows us to capture the heart of your celebration, from the final getting-ready moments through your ceremony, portraits, and the beginning of your reception.
Of course, every wedding is different. A smaller, intimate wedding may need less coverage, while a celebration with multiple locations, cultural traditions, or a longer reception may benefit from additional hours.
The most important thing is building a timeline that reflects your priorities.
A Sample 8-Hour Wedding Photography Timeline
Here's an example of what an eight-hour wedding day might look like with a 3:00 PM ceremony.
12:30 PM – Getting Ready & Details
We begin by documenting those final moments of preparation. Your dress, rings, florals, invitations, and the little details you've spent months carefully choosing.
This is also when we capture the excitement of getting ready, the laughter with your wedding party, and the emotional moments before everything begins.
1:30 PM – Final Preparations & Candid Moments
The finishing touches, buttoning up the dress, adjusting a tie, and perhaps a first look with a parent or wedding party.
These are often some of the most meaningful photographs of the entire day.
2:30 PM – Ceremony Preparations
We'll capture the venue, arriving guests, and the anticipation leading up to your ceremony.
3:00 PM – Wedding Ceremony
The moment you've been waiting for. The walk down the aisle, the vows, the first kiss, and the joy of finally being married.
3:30 PM – Family & Wedding Party Portraits
We recommend preparing a family photo list ahead of time to help everything flow smoothly.
Once family portraits are complete, we'll move into wedding party photographs.
4:30 PM – Couples Portraits
This is your opportunity to step away together, take it all in, and enjoy a little quiet time as newlyweds.
We'll provide gentle direction while leaving room for the natural, genuine connection that makes your photographs feel like you.
5:30 PM – Reception Details & Cocktail Hour
We'll document the atmosphere, thoughtful decor, and candid interactions as your guests celebrate.
6:00 PM – Reception Entrance, Dinner & Speeches
From heartfelt speeches to laughter around the tables, these are the moments that tell the story of your celebration.
7:30 PM – Golden-Hour Portraits or Reception Moments
If sunset timing allows, we'll sneak away for a few romantic portraits in that dreamy evening light.
8:30 PM – Photography Coverage Ends
Depending on your reception schedule, this may include your first dance or the beginning of the party.
This is an example timeline, not a one-size-fits-all schedule. Your ceremony length, sunset time, travel, and reception events will determine the best arrangement.
Should You Do a First Look?
One of the biggest decisions when planning your wedding photography timeline is whether to have a first look before your ceremony.
A first look gives you the opportunity to see one another privately before walking down the aisle. It can also allow us to complete some of your portraits earlier in the day, leaving more time to celebrate with your guests afterward.
But there's something equally beautiful about seeing each other for the first time at the ceremony.
There's no right or wrong choice. We encourage couples to choose the experience that feels most meaningful to them.
Why Golden Hour Is Worth Planning Around
If you've spent any time exploring our portfolio, you'll probably notice our love for warm, romantic golden-hour portraits.
Golden hour is the period shortly before sunset when the light becomes softer and warmer, creating that dreamy, cinematic atmosphere.
Some of our favourite wedding photographs happen during these quiet moments when couples step away from the celebration for just ten or fifteen minutes.
The exact timing changes throughout the year, especially here in British Columbia, so we always recommend checking your wedding date's sunset time when building your timeline.
Don't Forget to Include Buffer Time
One of our biggest pieces of wedding planning advice is to leave a little breathing room.
Hair and makeup can run behind. Family photographs sometimes take longer than expected. Travel between locations can be unpredictable.
And sometimes, you'll simply want a few extra minutes to hug your grandparents, laugh with your friends, or enjoy a quiet moment together.
A relaxed timeline gives you permission to experience your wedding day rather than rush through it.
What About Wedding Videography?
If you're booking both photography and videography, it's important to consider how the two work together throughout your day.
As a husband-and-wife photography and videography team, we work collaboratively to capture your celebration without making it feel overly directed.
While photographs preserve the beautiful still moments, your wedding film brings back the movement, voices, laughter, and emotions that make your day uniquely yours.
Having a coordinated photography and videography team helps create a seamless experience.
